50 ways to get samples
- Get samples from other modules.
- Get samples from sample packs on the internet.
- You can find a lot of good samples on Freesound.
- Get soundfonts and rip out the sounds with Polyphone. I would recommend this site for getting soundfonts.
- Scour various internet forums for samples.
- Get sounds from SNES games using SPC2IT. You can download SNES games here.
- VSTHost is a cool program for loading VSTs and recording their output.
- Pick up a synth and record it with your microphone. If you can line it in, even better.
- Pick up your instruments (piano, guitar, whatever you have) and record them.
- Go through your favourite game's SFX library and cherry pick the samples.
- Go through your mp3s on the computer and get out some isolated sounds.
- Loopback record YouTube videos (or TikTok or whatever). I found a cool gong sample from this video, for instance.
- Download Android apps (I recommend this website), rename them to .zip and dig for samples inside the /res/raw and /assets directories.
- Download iPhone apps, rename them to .zip and dig for samples.
- Download random programs on the internet and check if they have any sounds within them.
- Open some HTML5 games, open the Network tab in Inspect Element on your browser and download all the audio files. You can find a lot of online game sites. I like using Newgrounds.
- Go through videos on your phone/camera.
- "osu! skins" is a synonym for "sample packs". Get them on this website, rename them to .zip and get out the audio files.
- Tune in to random internet radios and rip out an isolated sound when you hear it.
- Open random files as raw data.
- Search for audio files on this website. It's an FTP search engine.
- Dork it out: open Google and search the following: intitle: "index of /" (.wav). If Google asks you to do a captcha because of "suspicious bot behavior", do the captcha and carry on.
- Download/loopback record any voice messages that you have received.
- Loopback record the movies you watch on your computer.
Pirateobtain some albums in high quality (preferably FLAC, but anything above 192kbps MP3 is also decent enough), go through the songs and get out some isolated sounds.
- Download operating system ISOs and get out the sounds, there are some for sure.
- Open a bytebeat website, make some noise in it and loopback record it.
- Get your old phones, line them in to your PC, open Audacity (or an audio recording/editing program of your choice) and record all the sounds. (You can record them with a microphone, but it won't be as accurate. You can buy a simple USB to mic input amp for 5-6 dollars and a good 3.5-mm to 3.5-mm cable for around 10 dollars. If you don't have 15 dollars, you'll be satisfied with the inaccurate sounds for sure.)
- Convert your images to BMP and read them as 24-bit signed little endian raw data. You can try 8-bit, but it will always give a similar metallic/smooth pad sound.
- Pick up a stick, preferably made out of metal (a screw can work) and record yourself hitting stuff around your house with it. Just make sure not to break something.
- Loopback record voice chats with your friends.
- Loopback record your online Zoom meetings/classes.
- Find your old toys or get your kid's toys if you're a parent (the ones that can make a sound) and record them.
- Find obscure TTS software and put weird characters into the input field.
- Don't have Splice? Download Roblox Studio, make a game project, open the sounds tab and search for what you need. You can loopback record the sounds because there's no other way of downloading them (from what I know).
- Record yourself making weird noises.
- Draw the samples.
- Turn on the voice recording on your phone when you go outside. When you return, you can dig through the recording.
- Loopback record videos on porn sites. you can find good claps and vocals.
- Go to a concert and record it.
- Desperately beg all people on Discord to send you samples.
- Record your calls, such as your boss firing you because you recorded everything around you on work. Or your partner breaking up with you because you turned on the recording while you two were having sex.
- Record your family meetings, such as Thanksgiving.
- Find your favourite tracker musician's email and spam them with requests to give you their entire sample dir. Accuse them of gatekeeping if they refuse. If that doesn't work, make a big fuss about it on your
twitterbluesky. Or even better, make a song about it.
- Solder out the memory/sound chip from your electronics and put it on an Arduino. Then make some code to leave all that data in a file. Maybe there are some cool sounds in there, such as that woman saying "the bluetoof dewise is redy to pear".
- Install a security camera outside your house/in your building's hallways. Say it's for security purposes, but use it to get out sounds.
- Tap your neighbor's landline.
- Follow people who look sample-worthy on the street and record them.
- Make a little satellite with a microphone and launch it into orbit. Don't forget to make some way to communicate with it and get out sounds.
- And the hardest: buy sample packs. Do this if you're really desperate.
